Set up SSO from Clever to a third-party app via SchoolDay

Clever SSO enables district users to log into SchoolDay-integrated third-party apps using their Clever credentials, eliminating separate passwords. Behind the scenes, SchoolDay automatically matches the verified Clever identity to synced roster data by email and seamlessly signs the user in.

Here's what you'll do to set it up:

1. Sync your rosters and make sure emails match. Confirm your district's roster data is flowing into SchoolDay, and that the email addresses there match what's used in Clever. See Step 1: Confirm rosters are synced to SchoolDay.
2. Turn on Clever as a sign-in method in SchoolDay. You'll enable IdP Authentication and select the Clever checkbox. See Step 2: Activate "Sign in with Clever" in SchoolDay.
3. Activate the app in Clever. Request and share the SchoolDay app from your Clever Portal. See Step 3: Activate the SchoolDay app in Clever.
4. Add your district ID to the Auto-SSO URL. This step is optional, but it saves users from having to pick their organization at sign-in. See Step 4: Add your district ID to the Auto-SSO URL.
5. Set up an SSO link for one-click access. This step is optional, but it allows users to skip the SchoolDay login page. See Step 5: Generate an auto SSO link for application.

After completing these steps, users can sign in effortlessly via the Clever bookmark. Clever authenticates them, and SchoolDay matches their email to sign them into the app.

Requirements

• Primary District Admin permissions in SchoolDay
• District Admin permissions in Clever
• Matching email addresses between SchoolDay and Clever for every user who will use SSO
• District data exported to SchoolDay from the district's SIS

Step 1: Confirm rosters are synced to SchoolDay

1. Confirm the district's roster data is syncing to SchoolDay through the Connect module.
2. Confirm the synced user email addresses match the email addresses used in the Clever Portal. This match is required for SSO to work.

Roster data can reach SchoolDay through an export from the district's SIS. SchoolDay does not sync rosters directly from Clever.

Step 2: Activate "Sign in with Clever" in SchoolDay

1. Log in to SchoolDay
2. Go to Connect > Administration > Login Methods.
3. Click Add new IdP on the bottom right.
4. Choose Clever.
5. Click Activate.

Step 3: Activate the SchoolDay app in Clever

1. Go to the Clever Portal.
2. Go to Dashboard > Applications > Add Applications.
3. Filter by name and search for "SchoolDay".
4. Select Request App next to the SchoolDay application.
5. Share the SchoolDay application with your users.

Once SchoolDay approves the connection, choose a sharing type in Clever. The sharing type determines which users can see the app in their Clever Portal. See Clever: Adding applications to your portal.

Step 4: (Optional) Add your district ID to the Auto-SSO URL

Do this if you want users to skip the organization-selection screen on the SchoolDay login page during SSO.

1. Log in to the Clever Dashboard.
2. Click Data browser in the left sidebar.
3. Copy the District ID shown at the top of the page.
4. Insert or replace the district_id value in the Auto-SSO URL with this ID.

Step 5 (optional): Set up an auto-SSO link for one-click access

An auto-SSO link lets district users open the third-party app directly with their Clever credentials, skipping the School Passport login page.

To generate an auto-SSO link in SchoolDay:

1. In SchoolDay, go to the Connect > Home page.
2. Select the app.
3. Click SSO Link in the top right.
4. Copy the auto-generated SSO link.

To publish the auto-SSO bookmark in Clever:

1. Go to the Clever Portal.
2. Click Customize Portal.
3. Click Add Link next to the category where the link should appear.
4. Select Create a custom link.
5. Choose or upload an icon (200x200 recommended).
6. Fill in the required fields:
   1. Title: Application name
   2. URL: Auto-SSO link generated in SchoolDay.
7. Select the user types, grades, and schools that should see this link. If you select specific schools, the link only appears to users whose primary school matches.
8. Click Add Link.
9. Click Publish Changes in the top right of the Clever Portal.

Verify the configuration

• Log in to the Clever Portal as a test user and confirm the SchoolDay app (or your Auto-SSO bookmark) appears in the portal.
• Click the app or bookmark and confirm it signs the user in to the third-party app without a separate login prompt.
• If you set up the district ID in Step 4, confirm the user is not prompted to select an organization during sign-in.
