Mater Fields

This integration connects Google Classroom with Lumen Touch so that teachers can manage grades more easily. Unlike a standard grade synchronization, this connection allows Lumen Touch to retrieve grades from Google Classroom via SchoolDay Connect. 

Deletion is not supported for this integration. Gradebook items are created and updated in Lumen Touch, but cannot be deleted. Categories also cannot be removed from Google Classroom.

Exported data types

Two apps are used for this integration: Lumen Touch 2-way Sync and  Google Classroom 2-way Sync. 

  • From Google Classroom, Connect imports LineItems and Results. It then exports Grades.
  • From Lumen Touch, Connect imports Categories, Classes, and Enrollments. It then exports Line Items and Results to Google Classroom.

Note for Classes (courses that exist in Google Classroom): Created classes are owned by the current administrator and cannot be synced without an owner. A category's owner changes if it's exported to a Classroom class that has a different owner than the current administrator.

How it works

This integration keeps your classes, assignments, and grades in sync between Lumen Touch and Google Classroom automatically. It ensures all updates flow both ways without manual steps.

  • Lumen Touch exports data: Categories, Classes, and Enrollments go to the SchoolDay Connect.
  • Google Classroom updates: Teachers create assignments and enter grades in Google Classroom.
  • SchoolDay Connect syncs: New and updated data from Google Classroom is imported back to Lumen Touch. Conflicts are resolved using Lumen Touch as the master source for roster data and Categories, and Google Classroom for Gradebook.
  • Final update: SchoolDay Connect ensures Google Classroom has the latest Assignments and Results

Requirements

When you create an Assignment in Google Classroom, make sure to fill in the Due date, Category and Instructions field. If these fields are empty, the LineItem will fail to export.

Activation steps

  1. Activate and setup Lumen Touch app. See Setup Lumen Touch app on SchoolDay
  2. Activate the Google Classroom app.
  3. In Sync Mode, select 2-way Sync.
  4. In Delivery Config:
    1. (Critical) Enable Categories Export: Before signing in to Google, you must enable the Categories export feature. This action is required for accurate grade synchronization, as it allows the system to read grade categories from Lumen Touch.
    2. Select Role Assignment by Email.
  5. In Master Fields, configure Master Fields for categories.
  6. Complete the remaining configuration steps.
  7. When finished, click Run Sync.

Mater Fields setup

The synchronization of data between Google Classroom and Lumen Touch is managed as follows:

  • Roster data: Lumen Touch serves as the master source for all fields related to roster entities.
  • Gradebook data:
    • Google Classroom is the master source for all LineItems (assignments/activities) and Results (grades/scores).
    • Lumen Touch is the master source for all Categories (grading categories).

Do NOT set Master Fields for:

  • Student: enrollment, otherEnrollments, rosters, studentContacts
  • Staff and SchoolAdmin: primaryAssignment, otherAssignments, rosters
  • Contact: schoolId, otherSchoolIds
  • Relationships: studentId, contactRelationship, contactType
  • Calendar: schoolId, otherSchoolIds, rosters, children
  • Course: schoolId, otherSchoolIds, rosters
  • Roster: students, otherStaff, calendars
