Apply Privacy Shield to a data sync

Enable Privacy Shield in a data-sharing request to mask or exclude sensitive attributes before syncing with a vendor application

Enable Privacy Shield in a data-sharing request to mask or exclude sensitive attributes when syncing roster data with a vendor application.

Note: Privacy Shield applies to future imports only. Data shared with the vendor before Privacy Shield was enabled is not retroactively masked.

Before you begin

  • You must have Primary District Admin permissions.
  • At least one vendor application must be activated in your district.
  • Mark attributes as sensitive before you turn on Privacy Shield, or masking will not apply. See Mark sensitive data attributes.

Enable Privacy Shield in a data-sharing request

When you activate a new application, Privacy Shield is enabled by default.

  1. Go to Applications and select the vendor application.
  2. Click Request Changes.
  3. In the Privacy Shield section, turn on the Privacy Shield toggle.
  4. Review the Attributes section. For each attribute, confirm the following:
    • Available checkbox — selected means the attribute is included in the sync. Clear it to exclude the attribute entirely.
    • Privacy Shield Supported checkbox — selected means the vendor supports masking for this attribute. If unavailable, masking is not supported for that attribute.
  5. Click Request Changes.
  6. Wait for the vendor to approve the request.

Note: After the vendor approves, masking is not applied until you run a data import from your SIS. See Run a data import.

Run the data import

After vendor approval:

  1. Go to your SIS or data source.
  2. Run a data import.

Masking is applied during import. After the import completes, the vendor receives only masked or excluded data.

Exclude a specific attribute from sync

If you want to prevent a specific attribute from being shared with the vendor entirely:

  1. In the data-sharing request, go to the Attributes section.
  2. Clear the Available checkbox for the attribute.
  3. Click Request Changes and wait for vendor approval.

Note: If a vendor marks an attribute as required, the Available checkbox cannot be cleared. The attribute will be shared regardless of your sensitive data settings. To check which attributes are required, review the application requirements or contact SchoolDay Support.
